New Medical Guidelines Prove Breast MRI Used As Adjunct to Mammography Helps Save Lives.
The latest in Breast MRI Technology Now Available at All West Coast Radiology Breast Centers in Orange County!
May 1, 2007 – Mission Viejo, Calif. – The latest guidelines released by the American Cancer Society (ACS) indicate that Breast MRI when used as an adjunct to mammography significantly aids in early detection of breast cancer, especially in high-risk patients. Further, the ACS recommends annual screening using MRI in addition to mammography for women with a 20 to 25 percent or greater lifetime risk of developing the disease. Breast MRI can detect breast cancers that are missed by mammography and physical examination – and this can be life saving in a woman with a strong family history of breast cancer. The bottom line: Breast MRI enhances patient care.
This is especially important news for women in Orange County, Calif., where cases of breast cancer happen to be higher than in most other areas of the country, says West Coast Radiology Centers’ (WCRC) Dr. Samantha Kubaska – one of the top breast radiologists in the county, a fellowship-level trained mammographer and Breast MRI specialist, who received her training at Massachusetts General Hospital, and at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
“It’s good to know that there’s an imaging center that physicians and individuals can turn to for the latest in Breast MRI, a technology that truly makes a difference in breast cancer screening and diagnosis,” says Dr. Kubaska. “We use the GE VIBRANT MRI, which produces high-quality images of both breasts at the same time. The benefits of Breast MRI as an adjunct to digital mammography are clear:
• Higher sensitivity – Aidsthe physician, increasing the accuracy of the diagnosis for those
with dense breasts and can better detect complications associated with silicone breast implants • Extensive anatomic coverage – Screens breast axilla and chest wall with high-resolution
and has an integrated system for MRI-guided biopsy • Produces clearly detailed images – This is critical when evaluating patients with known
breast cancer and determining the extent of the disease, or the presence of multifocal disease
“Not all imaging centers offer Breast MRI,” says Kubaska. “We are proud to offer both Breast MRI and digital mammography, which when used in conjunction with each other provide the best possible diagnostic capability. Each of our Breast Imaging Centers in Orange County offers these technologies. With our Breast MRI, we get significantly higher accuracy than we can with digital mammography alone, especially in younger women or in women with dense breast tissue. Plus, with digital mammography, results from testing come up immediately. That means the likelihood of having to retake images is greatly reduced, physicians can go over findings with their patients a lot more quickly, and if treatment is needed it can be scheduled faster. We also use a PACS system for immediate electronic communication between our offices and referring physicians. Radiologists and physicians stay connected around the clock and work closely to develop the best treatment plans and after-care for patients. We pride ourselves on our level of care and continuity.”
Kubaska explains how Breast MRI works and who should have the screening.
“Breast MRI gives us the ability to see through breast tissue clearly,” says Kubaska. “Now, women (and men, who can develop breast cancer, too) across Orange County have access to the best in digital breast imaging and MRI available anywhere. Any woman with a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer, those known to carry the breast cancer gene, or those with a history of radiation treatment for Hodgkin’s Disease, as well as women with newly diagnosed breast cancer, are candidates for Breast MRI Screening. Women who are at greater risk should ask their physicians whether they are candidates for Breast MRI.”
